Every garden I design for clients is a passion project, but this one is for me! In fall of 2023, I planted 500 square feet of my front garden. This triangle bed is filling underutilized space beneath three Serviceberry trees. The trees are a hotspot for a wide variety of pollinator and bird species all year, so it made sense to extend this habitat to the ground below. And less turf area is trending!
Because diverse plantings support diverse wildlife, this naturalistic design includes over 30 species of perennials and over 200 bulbs at this time. Plants are grouped in multiples of 3-5 for pollinators to locate their favorites, but still comingled with small mounding Autumn Moor Grasses to keep the overall planting arrangement natural feeling. It begins blooming in February through November. I have also added log piles, water sources and other features required to certifiy this planting as a National Wildlife Habitat.
So many neighbors have asked about the project and specific plants, that I have added a QR Code linking to this site and the below plant list. I love to experiement, so I'm sure the plant list will evolve over time. I hope that passersby enjoy the beauty of this new planting, but also intend for it to demonstrate how natives, native cultivars and non-natives (non-invasives) can co-exist to create a bustling little ecosystem in every front yard.
